“My house is so dated & my budget is small! How in the world can I make it feel better without a costly remodel?”

I hear this question all the time and I can totally relate!

As a fellow dated house owner I struggled for years with this same problem. I wanted my house to feel like a haven. I wanted my home interior to feel as good as what I was seeing plastered on social media. But in reality all I had was a dated double wide trailer with pine colored second hand cabinets, and furniture that was hand me downs from my in laws.

Nothing felt good.

To top off the yucky feeling house I was spending almost every second of every day inside with 2 young kids. My loathing of my space was growing.

With lots of years of practice, fails, educating and trying again, I figured out a system to make my home feel incredible.

I took that system and tested it on multiple other houses and proved it was possible to make a space feel really great on a shoe string budget, you just had to know a few tricks of the trade.

I took several steps to create a better feeling space starting with function.

To start my journey into a better space I had to get really straight on the function of my home. It seemed like every where I looked inside there was something that wasn’t functioning correctly.

It didn’t matter if it was the pile of coats at the front door, pile of shoes in the closet, or complete lack of space in the pantry, everything was evaluated for function.

It turns out, when you start to focus on function first, you can start to improve so much without too much work.

  • Too many coats = hang some hooks and declutter what wasn’t necessary.
  • Piles of crap in the pantry = better organization and reevaluating what was actually needed.

Getting rid of friction

One of the best steps I took to creating a better feeling space was to remove friction.

I’m an eclectic person. I can go to any store and find something I like. Usually it’s plastered with floral prints and bright colors, or teal. I’m a real sucker for teal.

But once I decided to stick to a very limited and specific color pallete, removed all of the things I liked just because they were cute, and got serious about only bringing things into my home that fit into a very specific mold, BAM everything changed!

Planning like I meant it

Lastly, I had to let go of the version of myself that flew by the seat of my pants. I couldn’t just willy-nilly decide to paint a wall because I found a clearance gallon of paint. – yes I’ve actually done that.

I couldn’t just decide at 10:40, standing in Home Goods 20 minutes before my littles needed a nap that I wanted to make my dining room feel better. – yes, I’ve also done that, cue random unnecessary decor purchase I was convinced was going to change my house for the better. Spoiler, it never did.

I had to get really intentional about creating a space that I could fall head over heels in love with.

I had to make mood boards, study colors, and design something lovely.

Insert eye roll. That sounds like a lot of work.

Yes, it was a lot of work. But it paid off tenfold! Not only did I make my home feel incredible, I did all of it on tight budgets, not wasting time and money with impulse purchases at Home Goods.
